ASCAT/MetOp scatterometer data : first results for sea ice study ArchiMer
Ardhuin, Fanny; Ezraty, Robert; Croize-fillon, Denis.
Backscatter values from scatterometers are commonly used to estimate wind field over oceans, their ability to monitor sea ice coverage, age and drift has been also demonstrated. Here, ASCAT backscatter coefficient has been processed for sea ice geophysical interpretation in order to increase the long time series of ice parameters already available. It has been shown that incidence- adjustment is mandatory for geophysical meaning, the backscatter maps enable the discrimination between multi year ice and first year ice, these maps can also be used as a basic product for sea ice drift estimation. Changes of gill and hemocyte-related bio-indicators during long term maintenance of the vent mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus held in aquaria at atmospheric pressure ArchiMer
Bettencourt, R; Dando, P; Rosa, D; Riou, V; Colaco, A; Sarrazin, Jozee; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Santos, R.
The deep-sea hydrothermal vent mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus has been the subject of several studies aimed at understanding the physiological adaptations that vent animals have developed in order to cope with the particular physical and chemical conditions of hydrothermal environments. In spite of reports describing successful procedures to maintain vent mussels under laboratory conditions at atmospheric pressure, few studies have described the mussel's physiological state after a long period in aquaria. In the present study, we investigate changes in mucocytes and hemocytes in B. azoricus over the course of several months after deep-sea retrieval. The visualization of granules of mucopolysaccharide or glycoprotein was made possible through their inherent...

Morphologie et hydrodynamique comparées des pertuis charentais : résultats de modélisation par Mars 2D ArchiMer
Stanisiere, Jean-yves; Le Moine, Olivier; Soletchnik, Patrick.

Littaye-mariette, Anne.
In the northern Bay of Biscay (France), catches of Atlantic sardine (Sardina pilchardus, Walbaum) fluctuated widely at a time-scale of a few days until the end of the fishery in 1970. These variations were not syndhronous between the adjacent Douarnenez, Audierne and Concarneau Bays in southwest Brittany, or between Belle-Ile, Quiberon and Le Croisic or the fishing harbours of Les Sables d'Olonne and Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie further south. Wind speed effects on hydrology and circulation also varied between these areas. Significant relationships between wind speed from one specific component or an index composed with the tide range and the wind speed and catches per unit of effort or CPUE were obtained from regression analyses for all areas except Audierne...

Surges, atmospheric pressure and wind change and flooding probability on the Atlantic coast of France ArchiMer
Pirazzoli, Paolo Antonio.
A statistical study of hourly tide-gauge records at Saint-Gildas, Saint-Nazaire, Port Tudy, Brest, Le Conquet and Roscoff, as well of three-hourly wind and air pressure records at Belie lie and Ouessant over the last 50 years, has made possible the definition of the main meteorological factors which are associated with the development of positive or negative surges. Recent changes in these meteorological factors indicate that atmospheric depressions and strong surge winds are becoming less frequent and that the ongoing trends of climate variability show a decrease in the frequency and hence the gravity of coastal flooding. However the highest sea surges of the last decades did not occur at the time of spring high tide. There is a significant statistical...

Kerdreux, Michel.
In the coastal zone between the estuaries of Loire R. and Vilaine R., IFREMER has made four moorings from february to march and from june to september. The speed and steering of currents are precised, and the temperature and salinity are given. The Direction of national météorologie furnished the date necessary to trace wind speed and steering.

Validation and analysis of ocean parameters using ASCAT data ArchiMer
Bentamy, Abderrahim; Ardhuin, Fanny; Croize-fillon, Denis; Queffeulou, Pierre.
This project aims to investigate the quality of ASCAT measurements as well as their use for oceanographic purposes. The accuracy of ASCAT retrievals will be mainly based on the use of collocated data from moored buoys, numerical weather prediction models, and satellites. The resulting collocated data will be used to explore the accuracy of the geophysical model function which relates the backscatter coefficients to surface wind vectors, as well as to assess the quality of ASCAT vector winds at global and local scales. Once this objective reached, it will enable to fully utilize the MetOp data for oceanographic applications. They will contribute to evaluate various estimates of ocean surface flux parameters required to force ocean general circulation...
